The kandy perahara
The Maligawa tusker carries the casket. Beautifully attired elephants, Kandyan dancers and drummers are the attraction in this Perahera which parades the streets for five days. This is followed by the Randoli Perahera. The Randoli is also conducted for five days. The Randoli is most spectacular on the fifth night of the Perahera, which is also the Esala Poya day. The whip crackers are the first in the procession. They announce the coming of the Perahera.
This is followed by Kandyan dancers and drummers who are skilled in their art. The torch bearers add to the splendor of the Perahera. They are followed by over a hundred and fifty elephants dressed in embroidered silks. Then exponents of various dances from the Devales follow. There are many feats of skill. The Diyawadana Nilame and other Nilames follow them. The final Randoli culminates in the water cutting ceremony in the early hours of the following morning. The Maligawa tusker cuts the water of the Mahaweli with its trunk and collects a pot of water. This water is taken to the Maligawa añd kept till the next year's Perahera. The Perahera culminates with the Day a done a Bede 20.
